World Cup fever is building. Yesterday marked 150 days until the biggest competition in football gets underway and punters should start considering a few of 888sport’s World Cup betting markets. Here, I will be looking at a few contenders for the Golden Boot – who will finish as the top goal scorer at the 2018 event?
The golden boy of Brazilian football, Neymar deserves his spot at the head of the betting after a simply sublime 2017/18 campaign so far. Since moving to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, the 25-year-old has taken his game to new heights – scoring 20 goals and making 12 assists in just 22 appearances; an incredible achievement.
To put his current form into perspective, Neymar is directly involved in a PSG goal every 56 minutes that he is on the field. He is certainly a contender for the Ballon d’Or if he continues at this rate and an inspirational performance for Brazil in Russia may seal the deal.
Neymar has scored 53 goals in just 83 matches for his country and 8/1 could be an absolute steal of a price if Brazil go deep into the competition.
A late bloomer to international football, Sandro Wagner broke out in 2017 – scoring five goals in seven appearances for Germany. He recently moved back to boyhood club Bayern Munich almost ten years after leaving the club and the 30-year-old could be set for a huge second half of the campaign.
Robert Lewandowski is still Bayern’s main man but Wagner is an excellent backup and Joachim Loew will be keeping a close eye on his progress. Germany have played with a “false nine” in years gone by but that approach has changed somewhat since the beginning of the qualifying campaign.
Wagner has shown that he can lead the line as a more conventional striker and Loew may stick by the Bayern striker in the summer. 22/1 is a price well worth considering if he gets the backing of his manager.
By the time May comes around, England fans are probably going to be lured into the false sense of security that this Three Lions side can win the World Cup. If anyone has the talent to fire England to the latter stages of a major tournament, it is Harry Kane.
With 20 Premier League goals already this season, he has Alan Shearer’s record of 260 top flight goals well and truly in his sights. Meanwhile, Kane has also been solid on the international stage – scoring 12 goals in 23 appearances.
He is yet to score at a major tournament but that barren run will end sooner rather than later. At 20/1 to finish as the top goal scorer, it would be foolish to back against the Spurs star; Gareth Southgate’s side could be one of this summer’s surprise packages.
A Few Interesting Outsiders
Roberto Firmino stands out like a sore thumb at 66/1. The Liverpool striker has been simply sublime for the Reds this season and could feature prominently in Tite’s plans. With Philippe Coutinho and Neymar in the side, Firmino should see plenty of chances to score – that may turn out to be a huge price.
Meanwhile, Timo Werner could displace Wagner as Germany’s main striker for the competition; the 15/1 available here is well worth thinking about. If nothing else, Loew knows that he has two top forwards at his disposal...
Furthermore, Eden Hazard is another to bear in mind. Currently priced at 40/1, the Chelsea star may inspire Belgium to go far in the competition this summer. He is likely to hold down his spot in the starting line-up and could prosper, especially if given penalty duties.
A final option to consider is Thomas Muller. Should Loew revert back to the “false nine” system, Muller may be the main beneficiary and he is an industry best 30/1 with 888sport.
