Six of the best Euro 2016 moments

Dimitri Payet’s late winner vs Romania

What a way to start the tournament. France were on the verge of dropping two crucial points in the opening fixture of the competition before West Ham star Dimitri Payet unleashed a thunderbolt into the top corner of the net with barely a minute remaining on the clock. The French supporters went wild and that victory has helped Les Bleus to push on as they aim to win the tournament. A winnable quarter-final against Iceland at the Stade de France awaits Didier Deschamps’ men in the coming days...

Cristiano Ronaldo’s strop after the Iceland game

The Portugal man HATES losing. Cristiano Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of the best footballers of all-time but he really did spit his dummy out after Portugal failed to beat Iceland during the group stages. Ronaldo claimed Iceland have a ‘small mentality’ and that they will never strive to achieve anything – his words maybe out of frustration after they limited the Real Madrid man’s impact. Ronaldo could still have the last laugh as Portugal are now just 90 minutes away from a place in the semi-finals...

Michael McGovern’s sensational effort vs Germany

Northern Ireland fans have been singing about Will Grigg being on fire all tournament but goalkeeper Michael McGovern was the saviour in their group stage clash with Joachim Loew’s Germany. McGovern made a number of crucial saves to keep Northern Ireland’s goal difference down – and his stops were integral to their chances of advancing to the knockout stages. And although they lost to Wales in the last-16 round of the competition, McGovern’s individual performance against Germany will live long in the memory...

Gabor Kiraly’s sweatpants (yes really...)

This is actually a thing. Hungary’s veteran goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly attracted plenty of media attention throughout the competition for... not wearing shorts. Instead, the 40-year-old opted to wear sweatpants in goal and social media went crazy for it. In fact, many pundits in the studio and commentary gantry even followed suit and paid tribute to Kiraly with their attire; the world went wild for sweatpants. Hungary were thrashed by Belgium in their last-16 clash but Kiraly’s trousers will stay with the fans for quite some time...

Bale’s Wales thrash Russia to top Group B

Wales last featured at a major tournament in 1958 but they have almost looked at home throughout Euro 2016. Chris Coleman’s side have looked strong on the whole but their best performance came in their Group B decider against Russia. Wales knew that a point would secure their place in the last-16 but Bale and co went for the jugular – and it paid off. Wales scored three times to send out a clear statement of intent ahead of the knockout stages and they had the added benefit of finishing above Roy Hodgson’s stuttering England...

England’s embarrassing defeat to Iceland

One of the worst moments in English football. Hodgson’s men were expected to beat Iceland comfortably but they simply couldn’t perform on the big stage. England crashed out to a country with a population smaller than Leicester and a red-faced Hodgson resigned almost immediately. The Three Lions were tipped to challenge for European glory this summer but their hopes were dashed – mainly by Joe Hart’s shoddy goalkeeping and Harry Kane’s non-existent threat upfront. Ah well, there’s always the World Cup in 2018...
