Players like Philippe Coutinho don’t come along very often. The Brazil star has matured into one of the finest attacking midfielders on the planet and Liverpool have a real diamond on their hands. Last season, he was a pivotal figure for Jurgen Klopp’s side – scoring 13 goals and recording seven assists in 28 Premier League games, eventually helping the Reds to qualify for this term’s Champions League.
Coutinho has flourished in recent years and he is now widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s most coveted talents. Liverpool will know that fending off an advance from Spanish giants Barcelona won’t be easy but the Reds must do everything in their power to keep the Brazilian at the club. With Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and summer signing Mohamed Salah, Liverpool have the attacking qualities needed to win the English title.
Starring for one of England’s most prestigious clubs on a weekly basis is one thing but plying your trade for Barcelona is a whole new level. At 25 years old, Coutinho is now in the prime of his career and the Brazilian will want to win trophies on a regular basis. He may struggle to do that at Anfield and an eventual move to Camp Nou could be on the cards.
According to reports, Neymar is on the verge of a shocking world record move to Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona will be keen to replace the Brazilian before the end of the transfer window. As of July 21st, Coutinho’s compatriot is a 5/2 shot to stay with the Spanish giants whilst a move to the French capital looks likely at 1/5.
Good news Liverpool supporters, Coutinho is priced at just 1/5 to stay at Anfield and fans will hope that the Reds can keep hold of the Brazil star for at least one more year. At some point, Liverpool will come under intense pressure to sell Coutinho to one of Europe’s elite clubs and qualifying for the Champions League on a yearly basis is an absolute must.
Should Neymar depart for PSG, Barcelona may come knocking with an improved bid and Liverpool may find it very difficult to turn an offer down. Some have suggested that the Reds can cope without Coutinho, especially after Salah’s arrival, and the Anfield hierarchy might have to intervene and go against Klopp’s wishes if a mammoth offer comes in.
Coutinho is currently 3/1 to join Barcelona before the end of the summer and his future at Liverpool will be very much determined by Neymar’s ongoing situation. The Reds star looks happy at Anfield but a lucrative contract offer, the opportunity to play alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and former Liverpool hero Luis Suarez, and a tempting financial figure for the club could put the wheels in motion.
Another potential outcome is that PSG fail in their pursuit of Neymar and use a large chunk of that figure on Coutinho. Less than two weeks ago, the French club were strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old but nothing materialised and Neymar has been their main focus since. At 8/1, they are well worth considering in the Coutinho market.
The transfer window is often referred to as ‘crazy season’ and this could be the craziest season yet. We’ve already seen extortionate sums of money spent and another huge fee could be on the cards if Coutinho departs Anfield this summer. Whether it is Barcelona or PSG, Liverpool will be getting a hefty payday. But if truth be told, money can only get you so far and Klopp’s men will be better keeping the Brazil star on their books for the time being.
