We are just days away from one of the largest fights in boxing history. In the early hours of Sunday morning, Floyd “Money” Mayweather will face MMA superstar Conor McGregor in Las Vegas in what has been billed as the most lucrative fight of all-time.

The Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao bout was a bit of a damp squib but this fight promises to be much more of a spectacle.

It is an intriguing contest to say the least; McGregor’s lack of boxing experience is a major worry for Irish fans but you could argue that Mayweather has been out of the game for some time and that may cancel out – it is sure to be a fantastic occasion if nothing else.

Floyd Is Chasing The Magical 50 Mark

McGregor is all that stands in Mayweather’s way in his hunt for that elusive 50-0 winning record. Statistically, the American is one of the greatest boxers of all-time and one more victory will further cement his spot in the history books.

A dominant performance would certainly help his standing in this regard – especially after spending a large spell out of the sport. 888Sport are offering a special on this fight; Floyd to win every round that the fight lasts on the judges’ scorecard at 1/2.

Mayweather is a supreme talent. He may be both slower and older but he is still a seasoned professional and he will use every trick in the book to slow McGregor down. Anyone looking for an open fight may be disappointed...

McGregor: The Man To Rewrite The History Books?

49 people have tried before him – all 49 have failed. McGregor has the seemingly impossible task of defeating Mayweather; a concept that seems bizarre at best. For the most part of his professional fighting career, the Irishman has competed in Mixed Martial Arts but that is all about to change.

For the first time, McGregor won’t be fighting in the octagon... he will be fighting in a boxing ring. A fair few have tipped Mayweather to win this early on but I can’t see it. McGregor has risked too much to lose in the opening stages of the bout and 4/6 for seven or more rounds represents decent value.

In all fairness, he does have a few clear advantages over Mayweather. Not only is he taller but he is heavier, more powerful and arguably well suited to the transition to boxing.

But until he steps foot in that ring, he is an unknown quantity. His past achievements in MMA might as well be forgotten; this is his time to rewrite the record books.

Prediction

I’d love to see McGregor win but it just doesn’t add up. Facing somebody like Mayweather in your first professional bout is gutsy and brave yet it also feels a little naïve.

Critics of this particular bout have claimed that the fight makes a mockery of the sport and I can see why some would argue that. But with the big night drawing closer, it is time to sit back, relax and enjoy what could be a HUGE night in Las Vegas.

The obvious thinking would be for Mayweather to win by stoppage. McGregor may come out fighting early on but he cannot afford to go all out too quickly – stamina will define the closing stages of the bout.

For that reason, I’m tipping a Floyd success on points at 11/4. Mayweather has talked the talk about an open, expansive fight but in typical Mayweather fashion, I’m expecting the American to cover up and do just about enough to win. 50-0 beckons if he sticks to his tried and tested fighting style...
